Chapter 1: The cottage in the woods
Hello dear readers, my name is Alex and I want to tell you a story of something that happened to me long ago. When I was still a little girl I saw a falling star. My mother always told me that whenever I saw one I needed to do a wish. And me the silly child I was wished for my life to be like a fairy tale. Like all girls back than I hoped to find the prince of my dreams and live happily ever after. Of course my life didn’t go that way. I just went to school and when I grew older I noticed life is definitely not a fairy tale. I soon forgot about my wish and for convenient reasons I had no longer the desire to find that prince. After a big disappointment I saw a falling star again when I was on a cruise ship. When the star fell into the sea I dived for it as if it was the last straw for me to find the happiness I wanted. If it weren’t for Madison there I surely would have
drowned. Madison is a mermaid with golden hair, very beautiful and seductive. Unfortunately for me she already found her prince. Her love Alan, a human like me, loved her so much that he gave up a blooming fruit business to settle for a life deep under the water. It didn’t matter to him that he could not return to the land and not see his family any more. He just wanted to be with the love of his life despite he having legs and she having a fish tail. Of course such stories only happen in fairy tales or in the movies. Madison took me to the surface. Of course I was surprised of being saved by a girl that was half human and half fish. She explained me everything but up to this day I wonder if everything might just have been a dream. There is no proof of the moment that I fell into the water as no one saw that happening. I just disappeared into thin air to show up a few days later several miles away from the coast walking along a country road. As the police kept asking me questions about where I had been all the time I made up a story that sounded believable even if they did not believe it completely. But as I had not do done anything against the law that didn’t really matter for them. My family and friends were just happy to have me back safe and sound. I told everyone I felt sick on that ship, fell into the water and swam to the coast. When I reached the coast I started walking but as I was so tired from all these efforts I lost conscience and ended up into the ditch next to the road. The ditch was deep and I was lying under the bushes for no one to be seen. It took me a few days for me to wake up and was found by my best friend Sam. Up to this day Sam is the only person who knows what really happened. And as crazy as it sounds she believes me despite her being the most down to earth person I know. Once you have been reading this story she won’t be the only one any more knowing what really happened to me. So where did I end up when Madison saved me from death by drowning is the question you are probably asking yourself. Well I ended up in the woods. I don’t know which forest and I doubt if it even had a name. I never even knew there was a forest so close to the coast. All I remember is that there were dunes and hotels but not woods. Just as magically as it appeared that day it disappeared in the same way on the moment that I left this whole adventure behind me, as if it never had been there. Madison never explained me how it came there. She told me that the wishing star had not forgotten about the wish I made in my childhood. This magical forest was filled with stories, stories most of you know and you maybe hoped were true. It was up to me to make sure that people would not forget about them. Madison brought me to a cottage. Despite the cottage having no electricity at all or no lamp, candle or whatsoever, there was always light even at night when it was dark as if the wishing star was there all the time invisible but present nevertheless. The cottage was actually a single room which was filled with tables and chairs but no windows in the white walls. The tables were placed against each other so they formed a rectangle. In the middle there was a lectern in the shape of a fairy holding a star. On the lectern there was a thick book with red cover. Madison told me I had to go sit in the biggest chair and everything would become clear to me. I did as she told me. Before I could say anything else Madison ran out of the cottage to dive back into the lake near where she put me on the surface. If the lake was some kind of portal to the sea I never knew since the lake disappeared just like the forest at the end of the adventure. Running after her was no use since I could not move from the chair as if I was glued to it. I saw how the book went up from the lectern and came flying towards me landing on the table I was sitting at. The cover was dusty so the book obviously had not been used in a long time. I blew of the dust. The dust flew into the room and changed into something more sparkly. It looked like gold so shiny that I would have sworn it was fairy dust. On each table except on mine there was falling some of the golden dust. I was perplex when out of this dust a bird appeared on each of the tables, there were 17 in total. All the birds were pigeons but all having a different colour. It looked like all of them had once white feathers and these were coloured afterwards by a painter. That this place was magical well I had no more doubts about that but it was still unclear what I had to do. Was I supposed to read stories to these magical pigeons? How did they end up here anyway? Maybe the book could give me some answers and I opened it. The first page of the book had silver letters and looked so glimmering as if they were only written yesterday. I started reading the words. It took me a few sentences to realize that it was a letter aimed at me.
Dear visitor. I am aware that you probably must be wondering what you are doing here. And you also might be thinking why you are the one that we have chosen. Since long we have been waiting for someone with a good heart, the mind of a child and the spirit of a fairy to enter this place. You might be thinking you are not anything like that because real good people are the last ones singing their own praises. To cut a long story short, the pigeons that you can see around you are not real animals. They are in fact enchanted children ranging from the age of 9 to 17 who were curious about what it was like to be a bird and flying into the air as free as can be. It was the young witch Fuchsia who decided to grant them these wish. Unfortunately Fuchsia never mastered the spell to make things undone. She could not do things undone as that takes a human with a heart for children to break it. Breaking the spell is not sufficient though. Before you can send them back home you must read them stories, the stories which are in this book. After you have been reading all of them the page of quests will appear as each pair of children needs to pick a mission. It is of great importance that all quests will be completed properly. That will be the only way for them to be able to get back home and free the wishing star which is separated from her true love for too long already. Before you can start though you must read the words written under my name to break Fuchsia’s spell. Good luck!
Lyra ‘Silvertongue’ Belacqua
Magical star with its warm beams shine softly on my innocent children’s face. Write my name into the golden sand and take me with you on the rainbow to a land where all dreams come true.
I just finished reading that magic spell or the pigeons all transformed into humans, all of them girls looking curiously at me. Instead of bombarding me with questions they were just sitting down on their chair quietly waiting for me to say something. It was as if they knew they had to be quiet as a gesture of gratitude towards the one breaking the spell. Although I didn’t feel their big saviour at all since I was unsure of what was lying ahead of us and wondering if this would end well. I spoke to them and said: “I’m Alex, I’m not sure why I am here and if this is a dream or not. According to this book however I need to read you stories and we need to do quests after that. However all of you look so interesting to me. Perhaps I can’t get to know all of you that well as I hope to but at least tell me your name. Maybe we can start with you girl with that nice green bow in your hair. Please tell me your name, your age and what you like doing.
